There is an official body with standard criteria for classifying hotels in some countries. While most countries check their hotel rating systems at five, very few use six or seven star ratings, claiming to be the most beautiful and prestigious hotels in the world. At present there is only one seven star hotel in the world, though there are a few more under construction. The Burj- Al- Arab in Dubai, the only Seven Star hotel began in 1994 and was modeled after the sail of a famous Arabian ship. The foundation was constructed on an artificial island and the hotel is home to the world's tallest atrium. While the Burj- Al- Arab likes to believe it is the world's only seven-star hotel, it is officially known as a five-star deluxe hotel on the standard star system.

In order to establish a basis for comparison between different hotels, a rating system is used. When you have a basic understanding of it, you can make the best selection.
Star ratings have been established for comparing different hotels and giving patrons some idea what to expect in service, size, and amenities at various hotels. The star system differs slightly from country to country. There have been some attempts to standardize it world wide, but this has not yet been done. Generally, the differences from place to place are small, so understanding the hotel star ratings for one area will give you a good general idea of what to expect anywhere.
The system is usually based on five stars with one star being the lowest rating and five star the highest. A one star hotel is usually two to four stories high and owned by a single proprietor. Their furnishing and facilities are clean but simple. There is usually no restaurant located in the hotel, but good dining is found nearby. The two star hotel is similar, but usually part of a larger chain. The furnishings do not differ much from a one star, but televisions are standard in the rooms. Some two star hotels have limited dining facilities attached, but no bellhop or room service.
Three star hotels are considered first class hotels. They will feature much more elaborate furnishings and an attached dining facility serving from breakfast through dinner. They are located near major attractions and are also part of a larger chain. The four star hotel is also called a superior hotel. It features well furnished and well lit rooms. Bell hop, room service, and valet parking are generally featured. The four star hotel is often located near other similar hotels and has one or more pools plus fitness centers. The dining room and room service offer several menu selections.
The five star hotel is a deluxe hotel. It offers just about anything you would expect from a deluxe hotel. Large lobbies and round the clock room service are expected. The rooms are large and well appointed. Pools, several choices of dining and entertainment are often featured as well. Although most five star hotels are part of large chains, some independent hotels also merit the rating as they offer intimacy and personal service not always available with chain hotels.
There are a couple of hotels located overseas that are claiming six star or seven star ratings. Although this is considered simply an advertising ploy, it can be assumed that these hotels will be both very fancy and very expensive to justify their six or seven star claims. Although this is just a basic guide, a rudimentary understanding of hotel star ratings will give you an edge when planning your stays or reserving rooms.

five star hotels

Here you should find spacious and luxurious accommodation throughout the hotel, matching the best international standards. Interior design should impress with its quality and attention to detail, comfort and elegance. Furnishings should be immaculate. Services should be formal, well supervised and flawless in attention to guests' needs, without being intrusive. The restaurant will demonstrate a high level of technical skill, producing dishes to the highest international standards. Staff will be knowledgeable, helpful, well versed in all aspects of customer care, combining efficiency with courtesy.

A 5-stars hotel is a luxurious hotel of high level design. The reception and janitor are available 24 hours and there is also 24-hours room service for drinks. There will be permanent assistance for arranging your transport, valet parking and bell boys will carry your luggage. The bar will have an international assortment of drinks and there will be a restaurant for lunch and dinner. The hotel will have at least two comfortable suites of minimal 50 square metres. The hotel will accept at least two types of credit cards. In addition to the facilities of a 4-star room, the 5-star rooms have air conditioning that can be regulated individually. The bathroom has an extensive assortment of guests articles, such as bodylotion, and luxury soaps and slippers and a bathrobe for each guest. Most rooms will be at least 26 square metres. Extra services or facilities in a 5-star hotel may include private parking space, a shuttle service, magazines and papers, a hairdresser, whirlpool or beauty salon.

Four Star Hotels

Expectations at this level include a degree of luxury as well as quality in the furnishings, decor and equipment, in every area of the hotel. Bedrooms will also usually offer more space than at the lower star levels, and well designed, coordinated furnishings and decor. The en-suite bathrooms will have both bath and fixed shower. There will be a high enough ratio of staff to guests to provide services like porterage, 24-hour room service, laundry and dry-cleaning. The restaurant will demonstrate a serious approach to its cuisine.

A 4-star hotel is a very comfortably decorated first class hotel. You can have a drink brought to you in the bar or lounge and you can order room service during the day. There is a laundry service available, and a pc with internet connection is available on request. You do not need to walk up more than one floor to reach your room. In addition to the facilities of a 3-star room the 4-star rooms have a bathroom with private shower and toilet and a hair drier, writing paper and pens, a few armchairs, an extra socket for your pc or laptop, and an internet connection. The curtains block out daylight and your valuables can be put away in a safe in the room or elsewhere in the building. The room also have a luggage storage space and a minibar (or room service for drinks till 11 pm). Most rooms are at least 22 square metres. Extra services or facilities in a 4-star hotel may include air conditioning that can be individually adjusted, beds longer than two metres, broadband internet connection, an extensive assortment of beauty products, 24-hour reception, facilities for lunch or dinner, conference rooms, a pool, fitness or sauna.

Three Star Hotels

Three Star Hotels
At this level, hotels are usually of a size to support higher staffing levels, and a significantly greater quality and range of facilities than at the lower star classifications. Reception and the other public rooms will be more spacious and the restaurant will normally also cater for non-residents. All bedrooms will have fully en suite bath and shower rooms and offer a good standard of comfort and equipment, such as a hair dryer, direct dial telephone, toiletries in the bathroom. Some room service can be expected, and some provision for business travelers.

The three-star hotel has all the facilities of the one and two-star hotels but the difference lies in the following. The building and its installations are of very good quality and in constant maintenance, has a meeting hall with a capacity of 30 people, separate toilets for men and women, sporting facilities, notably, a swimming pool, a tennis court and valley ball field, telex, 30 bed rooms, internal telephone, room information on room, food prices, breakfast in the rooms, credit card payment system, garden, guarded parking lot both day and night, etc.

Two Star Hotels

In this classification hotels will typically be small to medium sized and offer more extensive facilities than at the one star level. Some business hotels come into the two star classification and guests can expect comfortable, well equipped, overnight accommodation, usually with an en-suite bath/shower room. Reception and other staff will aim for a more professional presentation than at the one star level, and offer a wider range of straightforward services, including food and drink. Public arena
The entrance must be independent for hotels that equally run other facilities such as restaurant, bar or night club. The reception must have an area of at least two metre square. Common toilets for men and women must have an English flushing toilet system and a wash hand basin with hot and cold water. Other facilities include the presence of a receptionist who serves as adviser. There should be a simple telephone booth at the entrance hall and information and message facilities.

Private Rooms
The hotel must have a minimum capacity of 20 rooms with measurements as specified by the law. Each room should have a dimension of at least two metre square, must have a water system toilet including a mirror, double winder ventilation, telephone, identification number on each door, electrical installations, and 80 by 190 cm bed. It should also have a 160 by 200 cm bed for two persons with mattress of 0.13 m thick.

Customer Service
Beddings and toilet towels must b changed twice daily as well as after the departure of a client. The toilets must be provided with soap, toilet tissue and deodorants daily.
Three types of payment must be applied, cash, travellers cheque, and foreign currency. The hotel must equally have the following: a television receiver, a serf, restaurant, dry cleaning and ironing facilities.

Surrounding Environment
Access to the hotel must be well developed. Parking lot should make provision for at least one vehicle per three rooms.

One-Star Hotel

A 1-star hotel is a good, simple hotel with a standard interior/design. You may expect a hospitable service and clean surroundings and breakfast will be available. All rooms will have a bed with matching bedding, a table with chairs, a cupboard, heating, and a sink with hot and cold running water and soap. It is possible to lock the room and there is a window and a bedside lamp. There is at least one common bathroom per every ten rooms. Others criteria that one-star hotels should have are as follow:
